The prints are made using a process called ‘dye-sublimation’. They are produced on slimline aluminium with either a high gloss or satin finish. These 1.2mm thick metal prints have a depth and colour intensity that is regarded as the highest quality technique for the production of these editions available on the market today.

In addition, these prints are also archival, waterproof, UV resistant, chemical resistant and abrasion-resistant. The unique process to make these pigment prints entails the transition of a substance (in this case, the special inks) directly from the solid to the gas phase without becoming a liquid first. The eight dye sublimation inks we use for the production of the work consist of a solid and heat-intensive dye. The image is first printed on to support using these inks, then on to transfer paper, which is then applied to a specially coated 1.2mm aluminium panel. Using both heat and pressure, the dye particles change into a gas, bond with the polymers in the aluminium, and then change back into a solid-state; fusing the image and aluminium.

With this procedure we are able to achieve intensely sharp colours with an outstanding depth and durability. The prints have a rectangular light weight U profile for stability and hanging and require no additional glass, acrylic, lamination, or coating to protect them.

High Definition photographic print on glossy photographic paper mounted on Dibond and protected with Plexiglas.

Dibond is the perfect base, it is the brand name of brushed aluminium composite sheeting, lightweight and rigid, it consists of a flexible polyethylene core covered with a thin aluminium sheet on each side and is finished with a high quality lacquer. On the back side, a rectangular U profile for stability and easy hanging.

Plexiglas is a transparent acrylic plastic, which protects the surface of the photograph. It is anti-reflective and filters 50-75% of UV rays, it is anti-static, scratch resistant and lightweight.

Using both heat and pressure the photographic print is mounted between the Dibond and the Plexiglas, staying forever encapsulated, protected and ready to hang!

Liquid Gloss coating consists of a transparent, liquid two-component epoxy resin. This high-gloss coating protects the colours of the photograph and prevents stains and scratches. It has a natural augmenting and illuminating quality, making the colours and lines stand out.

Due to the fact that the resin is applied in a liquid state, the edges of the piece are smooth and rounded as apposed to straight, rectangular Plexiglas edges.

The photographic print is first mounted on Dibond, then several layers of Liquid Gloss are carefully applied on the surface of the photograph. This way the photograph stays forever encapsulated, protected and ready to hang!
